The delightful 4.5-bedroom villa known as ‘The Maharaj’, complete with its private 16-metre swimming pool, offers peace and tranquillity in the heart of the Oberoi area, just footsteps away from the beach on Bali’s south-western coast.
Upon entering the property through a traditional set of Balinese doors, guests will find themselves in a gorgeous garden punctuated by lotus ponds and planted with mature trees, coconut palms and flowering shrubs,. Boasting contemporary tropical architecture, The Maharaj sleeps 8-9 guests.
A villa for relaxation and play, it is perfect for families and discerning couples, offering a captivating blend of luxury, recreation, privacy, and exemplary service.
The Maharaj comprises a spacious 2-storey building with an adjoining open-sided living and dining pavilion, a self-contained single-storey guesthouse, a swimming pool and a relaxation pavilion set within a large walled garden. There are four full-sized bedrooms complete with queen beds and en-suite bathrooms. Additional sleeping space is provided with the inclusion of a fifth bedroom furnished with a single bed intended for use by children or nannies. There is a secure car parking area outside the main entrance.
Master Bedroom. The Master Bedroom is located poolside, immediately next to the living and dining pavilion, and is accessed by a pair of sliding glass doors. This spacious bedroom is air-conditioned with the additional provision of a ceiling fan. It features a polished cream marble floor, which is pleasingly cool beneath the feet. The room is dominated by a queen-size teak opium bed; a remarkable mosquito net hangs from the ceiling and is tied back with carved ‘wayang’ puppet heads. There is also a cushioned daybed, teak bedside tables, and fitted wardrobes with sliding louvre doors. The simple décor of the white walls is enhanced with touches of ethnic beauty such as the brass statue of a reclining Ganesha, and the gilded lamp-stands, which also depict traditional wayang puppet characters.
A dressing area with more fitted cupboards, together with a safe deposit box, is located between the bedroom and the en-suite bathroom. The bathroom is characterised by a magnificent circular terrazzo bathtub; large enough for more than two, it is flanked by a glassless window and looks out onto its own private garden. This garden area is bordered by high walls; it has a pebbled floor and is planted with colourful bougainvillea and sweet scented frangipani. Guests will also enjoy the open air experience of the powerful rainshower, which is sheltered by the roof and features timber decking underfoot. A teak vanity unit complete with cupboards and topped with sparkling ‘his & hers’ polished stainless steel washbasins is located within the indoor section of the bathroom, where there is also a toilet and an abundance of wall mirrors.
Bedroom No. 2. An open teak staircase leads from the Living Room up to Bedroom No 2, which is located directly above the Master Bedroom, and is distinguished by teak balcony that wraps around two sides of the room. The balcony is furnished with a pair of cushioned lazy chairs and enjoys wonderful views of the garden, the pool and the wide open skies. The bedroom is accessed from the balcony via floor-to-ceiling glass doors; there is a polished marble floor, and a second set of glass doors leads onto the far side of the balcony. Bedroom No 2 follows a similar theme to the Master Bedroom, simply furnished with a queen-size opium bed hung with another stylishly romantic mosquito net. The white walls are adorned with colourful contemporary artwork, and there is also a jondang chair. The room is equipped with air-conditioning, a ceiling fan and a safe deposit box.
The spacious bathroom is linked by a dressing area complete with built-in cupboards. The bathroom features a semi-open air rainshower fitted with bamboo blinds to ensure the privacy of the guests. There is also a toilet, and a teak vanity unit complete with a stainless steel washbowl.
Bedroom No. 5. Located immediately next to Bedroom No 2 is a small air-conditioned bedroom furnished with a single bed, suitable for a child, a maid or a nanny. This room shares a bathroom with Bedroom No 2, accessing the bathroom via the dressing room so that guests remain undisturbed. The portable bed can be moved downstairs if required, and a baby’s cot is also provided.
Guest House (bedroom no. 3 and 4). Stepping stones lead across the immaculate flat lawn to the Guest House – a single-storey, self-contained cottage, situated on the far side of the pool, and home to Bedroom No 3 and Bedroom No 4. Both of the bedrooms feature soaring roofs, cool marble floors and sliding glass doors on two sides. Both are furnished with queen-size beds complete with mosquito nets. The rooms are adorned with attractive artefacts including silk wall hangings and glass lamps; both are equipped with air-conditioning, ceiling fans and safe deposit boxes. One bedroom is complemented by a walk-in wardrobe. The bedrooms share a garden bathroom with a stone pebbled floor and a large open-air bathtub, which is protected from the elements by the eaves of the roof. There is also a shower cubicle, a washbasin and a toilet. The cottage is bordered by a colonial-style timber-floored verandah, its roof supported by coconut wood pillars. This is a lovely spot for relaxing with a book; it overlooks the garden and pool and is furnished with chairs.
Living and Dining Pavilion. The open-air Living and Dining Pavilion features a soaring roof lined with split bamboo, above a polished teak floor bordered by white Palimanan stone. Cooled by natural breezes and ceiling fans, this large room is the focal point of the villa; it opens directly onto the pool deck, providing an easy transition from indoors to out, and bamboo blinds can be dropped for privacy and shade. The style is both eclectic and funky, showcasing antique furnishings, enchanting Indonesian artefacts, tribal masks and local artwork. Two comfortable daybeds and a chunky coffee table are positioned at one end of the room, where there is also a TV, DVD and quality sound system housed within an antique wooden cabinet. With views of the beautiful garden, this is a lovely spot for relaxing; the owners of the villa have thoughtfully provided an ample collection of magazines, books, games, DVDs and music CDs. The centre of the pavilion is furnished with low, circular table, inlaid with polished coconut shell. Surrounded by four low leather chairs and cushions, this can be used for dining, socialising or playing cards and board games. A formal dining table for eight is positioned at the far end of the pavilion next to the Kitchen. A striking feature is the carved Palimanan stone frieze, which depicts a scene from the five-thousand-year-old Hindu epic, the ‘Mahabaharata’, a tale of intrigue and conflict among kings, demons, gods and sages.
Pool and Garden. The 16-metre, freeform, infinity-edge swimming pool, with its eye-catching shape, emphasizes the minimalist features of the villa. It incorporates a circular children’s pool at one end, and four sunloungers rest upon the timber deck. At one end of the pool is an elevated ‘bale’ – an open-sided relaxation pavilion housing a massage bed and a massage chair. Here, guests can enjoy traditional massages performed by skilled, professional massage therapists. The tranquil ambience is enhanced by the soothing sounds of water bubbling over ornamental pots in the encompassing lotus ponds. A hammock is positioned in the garden at one corner of the living and dining pavilion beside the pool, and there is also an outdoor pool shower. The Maharaj is blessed with an enchanting garden. There are two lotus ponds, one of which is bridged by the pool deck and guarded by a serene Buddha statue. The beautiful flowering trees in the garden include gnarled frangipanis, pink ‘pohon kupu kupu’, and red ‘dadap merah’.
The Maharaj is located in the very centre of what is now considered to be the Seminyak ‘Prime District’ – a safe, upmarket neighbourhood that is home to some of the classiest properties on the island. It is close to the well-known Oberoi and Legian Hotels, twenty minutes' drive from the airport, and convenient for all of Bali’s main shops, shopping malls, tourist attractions and vibrant nightspots. The villa is just a few minutes walk from a wide choice of internationally acclaimed restaurants, including the famous Ku Dé Ta, La Lucciola, Living Room and Hu’u Bar. It is also within walking distance of a varied collection of chic designer boutiques, and just 300 metres from the sweeping Oberoi Beach, renowned for its world-class surf breaks, panoramic coastline views and legendary sunsets. Easily accessible sporting amenities include a choice of spectacular championship golf courses, tennis, horseback riding, dive schools, sailing cruises and much more.
